Valero consistently found a place on the various lists of the best companies to work for in the US. In early 2005, Fortune magazine ranked Valero third among big companies and 23rd among all companies on its list of the '100 Best Companies to Work for in the US'.

In addition to this, the Great Place to Work® Institute, which produced the "100 Best Companies to Work for in America" list, also featured Valero at No. 23. According to analysts, Valero was one of the few big companies that genuinely gave employees preponderance over financial considerations. Commitment to Safety
That Valero cared about the well-being of its employees was reflected by its high level of commitment to safety. The company laid down clear instructions regarding safety at all its plants and supervisors were given the responsibility for ensuring that all the workers were familiar with these instructions. The company published 'Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)'for all the materials that were used in its facilities. These contained detailed instructions about the properties of the material being used, its composition and common uses, identifications of hazards and safety precautions to be followed in using it, and first aid related to the use of the material...

 

Community Involvement
Valero had an extensive community service program that gave employees significant opportunities to participate in community initiatives on work time as well as volunteer time. According to its mission statement, Valero wanted to be a company that was known for giving back to community and community involvement was seen by most employees as being central to the Valero culture. In fact, according to company sources, the name 'Valero'was derived from the Spanish word 'valor', which meant 'to be of worth'or 'to be of value'...
